When clients call
An appeal is a different kind of work from a trial. It turns on the record already made, the legal errors that can be shown, and written argument.
A judgment has been entered, and the client believes the court got the law wrong.
A client won at trial, and the other side has filed an appeal.
A ruling on a key motion has decided the case before it reached trial.
The client needs a candid view of whether an appeal is worth pursuing.
What the work involves
The work begins with the trial court record: the pleadings, rulings, transcripts and exhibits. From that record, the question is whether there are errors that matter, and whether an appeal makes sense given its cost and the likely result.
Appeal deadlines are short and strict. Anyone considering an appeal, or facing one, should call promptly after the judgment or order is entered.
